A great week for young Pitreavie Athletes!

Published on Monday, 01 September 2014 21:45

This week saw five Pitreavie Athletes head to Bedford for the English Champs (or British Champs as they are often known). It's a real trek down but it's well worth it for the experience if you are looking to compete at the highest level of competition available across the UK. For all athletes it was their first time at this event.

On Saturday James Adam who is coached by John Wands was first to take stage in the heats of the U15 800m and in very windy conditions James secured his place in the final with a time of 2:05:20. Emma Rae was also competing on Saturday and secured a bronze medal in the U15 hammer with a throw of 49:35m. A great first day for both!

On Sunday James ran again in the final and in a very tactical race came 7th in a time of 2:06:9. James will now finish off a great season by running on Saturday for the Presedent's Select team in the Forth Valley League.

Also on Sunday throwers Rebecca Porter and Lisa O'Neill took part against the best with Rebecca joining Emma with a bronze medal and a PB  of 34.84m in the discus. Lisa who unfortunately has had an ongoing injury did well in the U17 javelin with a throw of 37.91 which put her in 5th place.  Lisa is coached by Dave Laing.

Emma and Rebecca are both coached by Colin McCulloch, with Rebecca getting an extra helping hand by her Dad Phil. Both coaches were present and I believe Mummy Porter was a tad emotional when Rebecca got her medal.

It sounds like it was a fantastic experience for athletes, coaches and parents, although not sure how much Dad Adam enjoyed getting to bed at 4:30am after the trip home on the Scottish Athletics bus! I am sure he'll be happy to do it all again next year (or take the lead of Mum Rae and book a flight!).

So after a fantastic weekend and plenty updates via our new facebook page, we look forward to this week and the weekend ahead. The UK School Games take part this week in Manchester, and with only one U17 slot per event per region it is a real milestone to be selected. Scotland, Ireland and Wales all count as single regions, with England split into five. Eamon Fitzgerald must be a very proud coach this week, as both his athletes Craig Moriarty and Kirsten Cronie have been selected to represent Scotland and will vault on Friday.

Moving onto the weekend we have lots of Pitreavie Athletes selected to compete in the President's Select Match in the Forth Valley League, with many chosen for the Presedent's Select team. With the league now running with eighteen teams across three divisions, athletes should be very proud of selection as it is based on performance in the previous three matches. For a full list of athletes selected see http://www.jsbplumbing-forthvalley.fsnet.co.uk/index.htm

Finally, the Pitreavie Trophy Meeting is on Sunday and for many, this will be the last competition of the season and a final opportunity to pick up PBs and maybe a trophy...or two! Good luck to all competing and for those who are taking part in their first competition, most of all enjoy it. Good luck everyone!
